Comparison of DIP LED and SMD LED

DIP LED

DIP LED is the normal traditional LED light tube, which functioned as a light electrical appliance originally. DIP LED is encapsulated with hard transparent epoxy resin (usually 3-5mm diameter). DIP uses its two long pins to dissipate heat and effect is not good, therefore it will affect light failure and reduce lifespan of the LED.

SMD LED

Compared with ordinary traditional LED light pipe, such as DIP LED or cluster LED, SMD is smaller in size and ultra bright (like 3528, 5050 type SMD). As nowadays electronic products become much more portable and smaller, small component like SMD LED is very competitive. Without an epoxy enclosure, it delivers a wider viewing angle. Most important is, SMD LED uses very low voltage and current, thus its consumption is relative low, and gives very little heat. SMD LED has longer life-span that can reach 100000 hours and twice as the DIP LED and lower light failure.

DIP LED vs SMD LED

1. Appearance: DIP LED is hat-shaped with a longer light pipe; SMD LED lamp beads are mostly rectangular, without pipe or with very short light pipe except that a kind of manual patch of high-power lamp beads is round.

2. Light perspective: DIP LED has obvious boundaries of perspective angle, SMD LED is less obvious;

3. Light beam: The beam of DIP LED is more dazzling, SMD LED delivers softer beam.

4. Encapsulation: The lens of DIP LED is hard transparent epoxy resin, SMD LED is transparent soft silicone.

6. Power: The power of DIP LED is low, most of which is lower than 0.5W (because of the difficulty in heat dissipation). The SMD LED can be made with higher power. For example, a 5050 SMD LED has power of 3W, which is impossible for DIP LED.

Application of DIP and SMD LED

Most of multiple bulbs flashlights use DIP LED, while single bulb flashlights use high power LED like 0.5W and 1W. As SMD LED is generally flat and rectangle and not fit for electroplated reflector, we use them as side light, like SP01-07 is the rechargeable flashlight that use ultra bright 3528 SMD LED.
