Philips New Scheme: TWO FOR ONE 60-WATT EQUIVALENT LED BULB FOR $4.97

Philips just lowered the bar for adopting LED bulbs throughout your home with the company’s cheapest ever 60-watt equivalent LED bulb. It costs just $4.97.

If that wasn’t cheap enough, when the bulb launches in May you’ll be able to pick up a two-for-one pack from The Home Depot. But you’ll have to be quick as the pack will only be offered for the first 90 days on sale. I suspect there will be stock shortages soon after launch.

The new bulb is called the Philips LED A19 and uses just 8.5-watts to produce the 60-watt equivalent output (that’s 2700k warm/soft white and 800 lumens). Philips claims the bulb has a 10 year life span (11,000 hours), costs just $1.02 per year to run, and compared to traditional incandescent bulbs will save you $62 a year. Those are some impressive figures, and remain impressive even if the bulb falls a bit short of those claims.

If you want something brighter, then Philips is also introducing a 60-watt daylight 5000k bulb and a 100-watt bulb, although pricing for those products hasn’t been announced yet. The 100-watt bulb has been achieved without increasing the overall size, so it remains a part of the A19 range.

$5 is a price point where consumers won’t think twice about picking up at least one of these bulbs to try it out, and two of them if they spot the introductory pack. That’s probably what Philips is hoping will happen and that we’ll come back for more. It also means other brands will have to react, meaning a growing number of $5 60-watt equivalent LED bulbs on store shelves later this year. That’s surely not a bad thing.
